Upstaging Mark Clattenburg as the villain of the piece would have been a tall order for anyone, but Rafa Benitez almost did it in one of the most controversial Merseyside derbies for years.
Condemnation for referee Clattenburg was unrelenting from Everton as manager David Moyes promised an icy response to any gesture of contrition and defender Alan Stubbs added: "He really should come out and explain some of those decisions. But if he did we'd be here all night."
