FC Barcelona defender and Mexican international Rafa Marquez (31) will speak with Barcelona manager Pep Guardola about his future with the club after Mexico’s World Cup campaign is over, according to an article that appeared in Sport on Friday. Marquez is a player that had appeared to have outlived his usefulness to the club after a few mediocre seasons, but recent events may be grounds for rethinking his role with the team.

Marquez has primarily played in Barcelona as a central defender, but injury and age have limited his usefulness in that position, which in Pep’s system often requires pace and perfect positioning. However, Marquez has so far enjoyed an amazing World Cup run as a defensive midfielder, scoring Mexico’s opening goal against South Africa, and stamping his authority on the match against France with a crucial assist and an overall sterling performance.

With the departure of Yaya Toure seeming more and more likely, perhaps there is room in the squad this coming season for a reinvented Marquez after all.
